Region 15 Athletes of the Month For February
NEW YORK – Region 15 has announced its Athlete of the Month honorees for February. The announcement was officially made on Friday evening.
The Region 15 Athlete of the Month winners are below.
Division I Women's Basketball: Bre Jefferson (Monroe University – New Rochelle)
Division III Women's Indoor Track and Field: Kailey George (Borough of Manhattan Community College)
Division III Women's Basketball: Aneyah McLamb (Monroe University - Bronx)
Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field: Christopher McKenzie (Borough of Manhattan Community College)
Men's Volleyball: Darren Lopez (Monroe University – Bronx)
Men's Basketball: Glen Mcbeth Jr. (Nassau Community College).
In the nine games Jefferson played in February, she led the Mustangs in points (183), scoring average (20.3), field-goal attempts (160), field-goals made (72), and free-throws made (21). On February 19 against Lackawanna College, Jefferson finished with a program single-game record 50 points. She also reached 1,000 career points during that contest.
George qualified for nationals in the 800-meter event with a time of 2:37.64 at the Garden State Open on February 20. She will also represent the Panthers at nationals in the 400-meter run. She qualified for the latter event back in January but in February, she improved her time to 1:05.54. The NJCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships will take place on the campus Washburn University, in Topeka, Kan., on March 6-7.
In Monroe - Bronx's 56-55 overtime victory in the Region 15 Championship Game against Kingsborough Community College on March 1, McLamb had an outstanding game for the Express with 21 points, 15 rebounds, four steals, and three assists. She drained clutch shots down the stretch, including the game-tying basket with 38 seconds left to send the game to overtime. Plus, she hit the go-ahead basket with 2.7 seconds left in the extra period that gave Monroe a 56-54 edge on its way to the victory. Thanks to her strong effort, McLamb was named to the Region 15 All-Tournament team and was selected to the region's honorable mention list. The Newark, N.J. native reached double figures in scoring six times and had three double-doubles during the month.
McKenzie will be joining George at the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships as he qualified for the national event in the long jump with a distance of 6.23 meters. He earned this accomplishment at the Rutgers Scarlet Knight Open on February 6.
Lopez had a strong February (and end of January when the season began) for the Express men's volleyball team. He produced double figures in kills seven times this month. Lopez tallied 17 putdowns, nine digs, seven blocks, and two assists against nationally ranked No. 10 Atlantic Cape Community College on February 19. The Bronx resident generated 15 kills, eight digs, and five service aces in Monroe's thrilling five-set Region 15 win on the road against BMCC on February 21. He slammed 15 kills to help the Express defeat nationally ranked No. 5 Union County College New Jersey on January 30. Lopez Has led the Express to a 3-1 record in Region 15 play, and 7-5 overall, during the end of January/month of February.
Mcbeth Jr. helped the Nassau men's basketball earn five Region 15 wins to close out the regular season and secure the #4-seed, plus home-court-advantage, in the opening round of the regional tournament. He averaged 24.6 points in seven games through the month, totaled 38 three-pointers, and shot 42.0% from the field overall. Mcbeth Jr. earned a spot on the All-Region first team.
