No. 14 Sullivan C.C. Grabs Fourth Straight Region Championship With 73-70 Upset Win Over Undefeated and No. 4 ranked SUNY Orange
Middletown, New York - After two close losses, the third time was a charm for the No. 14 ranked Sullivan Community College men's basketball team as they upset undefeated and No. 4 ranked Orange County Community College 73-70 in the 2023 Region XV Men's Basketball Championship at Orange County Community College. The Generals grab their fourth straight Region XV Championship since moving to the NJCAA Division II level improving to 22-7, while the loss is the first of the season for the Colts as they fall to 28-1.
Sullivan C.C. and Orange County Community College both qualify for the Districts next week as the Colts will square off against Raritan Valley C.C. in their matchup.
The narrative of this matchup was the same as a back-and-forth slugfest, with Sullivan C.C. grabbing hold later in the first half to go into the halftime intermission up 36-30. However, the Colts put on the heat in the second half, outscoring the Generals 40-37 and tying the game at 54 with 10:15 remaining. Sullivan C.C. would take blow after blow but be able to hold off SUNY Orange in the end to win 73-70.
The Generals big three delivered as they have all season, with sophomore Jair Currie leading the way with a game-high 23 points. Classmate Jay Alvarez chipped in with 17 points, and freshman Kipplyn Richvine had 12 points in the contest.
SUNY Orange had double-digit scoring efforts from all five starters, with 2023 Region XV Player of the Year Romeo Aquino leading the way with 18 points, while classmate Darius Boben had 15 points. Fellow upperclassman Tim Linton recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomores Kevin Stein and Keon Gill had 13 points and 10 points, respectively.
