Nassau CC Men's Bowling Finishes in 14th Place at the 2022 NJCAA National Championships
The Lions Men's and Women's Bowling teams traveled to Lansing, MI to compete in the 2022 NJCAA Bowling National Championships hosted at Royal Scot Lanes from March 3-5. The 3-day event began with doubles play. The pair of Kristen Smith & Leslie Mejia coupled for an 824-pin fall and a 38th place finish. Julianna Quinones-Rojas and Melissa Hernandez helped the cause with a 679-pin effort. Julicia Thompson bowled solo due to an injury to doubles partner Caitlin Chavatte and valiantly added 324 additional pins.
Men's Doubles saw Alex Dressner and Dylan Murphy place 38th with a 1004 total. Brandon Chan & Chris Tsirkas followed with a 940-pin contribution. Jude Cutolo & John Jacob Scotch concluded at 880 and Victor Viglione & Matthew Cohen rounded out the Lions day with a 682 showing. Singles play followed doubles and the day looked promising as Alex Dressner bolted to a 17th place finish among the 131 male participants with a 617 showing. The remaining Lion Men had mixed results but put in their best efforts.
The Ladies Singles saw Kristen Smith lead the way for the Lions with a 74th place finish at 403 of the 95 female participants. The other female bowlers finished the day closely matched finishing 88-92 respectively.
Team play added an opportunity for the Lions to advance up the leader board. The first 3 game block concluded with a 2209 pin fall. Block 2 showed some improvement going 2368 to wrap up the team portion in 14th place. The Women's team hung tough with fellow Region XV colleague Westchester Community College and shot 1647 & 1622 blocks to conclude in 12th place. The Women's scores were consistent and showed improvement from previous tournaments throughout the season.
The All-Event tally had Kristen Smith leading all the Lion ladies with a 1246 total pinfall for 61st place. The other ladies put their best foot forward and finished between 76th-86th in the 93 women's field. Men's play saw Alex Dressner with a strong showing with a 41st place finish on 1634 pins. Brandon Chan (62), John Jacob Scotch (68), Chris Tsirkas (92) and Dylan Murphy (98) all finished in the top 100.
Three rounds of Baker play rounded out the competition with the Women and Men finishing 12th and 14th respectively.
The opportunity to travel and compete among the top NJCAA college bowlers in the nation was a great intercollegiate athletics and educational experience and was greatly appreciated by the team after a more than 10-year hiatus.
