Accord, New York – History continues to write itself for the SUNY Westchester men's Soccer team. Last night, the Vikings took home a major piece of hardware, capturing the Mid-Hudson Conference Tournament Championship with a 2-1 victory over SUNY Ulster.
The Conference title is the first for SUNY WCC since they won it in 2019, ending a five-year drought. The Vikings would get on the scoreboard first in the 25th minute with a Francesco Gigilo marker assisted by Christian Antunez. From there, Westchester stuck to their MO for their entire season, playing sound defense until halftime.
The Senators, who have been a perennial top team in the conference, winning the last four titles, would start the second half with a quick goal to tie the game at one in the 48th minute. The Vikings would respond in the 60th minute, netting their second and ultimately the game-winning goal thanks to Oliver Tecuapetla. Lenan Pepic provided the helper on Tecuapetla's go-ahead marker. As the scoreboard time hit zero, SUNY WCC would edge top-seeded Ulster to regain the Conference Title.
The Vikings now look forward to the Region 15 Tournament, heading in as the #2 seed with a 10-1-3 record. Westchester will host the #7 seeded Tigers of Queensborough Community College on Saturday, October 26th, starting at 1 p.m. The Vikings took home a 5-1 victory over the Tigers back on September 10th to open their season. However, no team in the 8-team playoff bracket can be taken lightly. All eight teams are above the .500 mark for winning percentage.
