TOPEKA, Kan. – As part of the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship weekend, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its seasonal regional awards. The Monroe College Mustangs track and field team came away with four awards for the Atlantic Region, with student-athletes Prince Mcabelo and Shaquka Tyrell, as well as coaches Shirvon Greene and Charez Weste coming home with new hardware.

Mcabelo was named the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Atlantic Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year, repeating the award he won back in 2022. Tyrell matched Mcabelo and was named the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Atlantic Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year. Shirvon Greene was selected as the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Atlantic Region Men's Head Coach of the Year for the first time, while Charez Weste earned the distinction of 2023 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Atlantic Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year.

Mcabelo had an outstanding indoor season for the Mustangs, qualifying for the NJCAA Indoor Championships in six different events (600m, 800m, 1000m, 4x400 Relay, 4x800 Relay, DMR). He was a part of three new Monroe College records in the 800-meter run (1:49.94), the distance medley relay (9:50.52) and most recently, the 4x800 relay (7:39.13). In the Atlantic Region, Mcabelo ranked first individually in the 600m, 800m, 1000m heading into nationals, while the DMR and 4x800 relay also both ranked first. Mcabelo took fifth place at the NJCAA Indoor Championships in the 1,000-meter run, while being part of a second-place finish in the 4x800 relay and a third-place finish in the distance medley relay.

Tyrell had a terrific freshman campaign for the Mustangs during the 2023 indoor season. She qualified for the NJCAA Indoor Championships in four different events (600m, 800m, 1000m, DMR). Tyrell came into nationals ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region in the 600m, 1000m and the DMR, while ranking second in the 800m. On Day 1 of the NJCAA Indoor Championships this past Friday, Tyrell helped the Mustangs' distance medley relay team to a third-place finish overall.

Greene takes home his first Atlantic Region Men's Head Coach of the Year award after earning Assistant Coach of the Year honors many times in the past. The Mustang men came into the national championship meet ranked No. 12, but exceeded that mark with a 10th-place finish at the NJCAA Indoor Championships. The Mustangs were also the No. 1-ranked team in the Atlantic Region. Greene coached 10 athletes to qualification in nine different events for the NJCAA Championships. He also oversaw four different records that were broken throughout the 2023 indoor season. Greene had previously taken home the Assistant Coach of the Year award for seven straight seasons.

Weste earned the Atlantic Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year award in her first season as an assistant coach with the Mustangs. Specializing in middle-distance events, Weste helped guide eight Mustangs to qualification in six different events. Athletes under her tutelage ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region in the 400m, 600m, 800m, 4x400 relay and 4x800 relay.

The Mustang men placed 10th overall at the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. The women's team finished 20th at the national meet. Both teams combined for eight podium finishes, therefore earning eight individual or relay USTFCCCA NJCAA Indoor Track & Field All-American performances.
