Monroe Mustangs Women’s Track and Field’s Distance Medley Relay Team Claims Third on Day 1 of NJCAA Indoor Championships

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Monroe College Mustangs women's track and field team's distance medley relay team claimed third place to highlight Day 1 of the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at Washburn University on Friday. The Mustangs stand 14th overall after the first day of competition in the national meet.
 
The women's distance medley relay event was the first event of the weekend for the Mustangs, getting them off to a terrific start. The team of Kayla JohnsonKahliyah SmithShaquka Tyrell and Zothile Mbhamali clocked in at 12:35.98, shaving nearly 17 seconds off their seed time to claim third place in the race.
 
Johnson got back on the horse later in the day to participate in the preliminary round of the 800-meter run. She ran a time of 2:19.47, placing fifth overall to qualify for Saturday's finals.
 
Tyrell competed for the second time on the day in the 1,000-meter run. She clocked in at 3:08.63.
 
Alyssa and Abigail Dyett both ran in the 60-meter dash preliminaries on Friday. Alyssa Dyett finished with a time of 7.71 seconds, while Abigail Dyett crossed the line in 7.92.
 
Vegonia Jean-Baptiste ran in the 400-meter dash prelims. She finished the race in 1:02.95.
 
Day 2 of the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships gets underway on Saturday, March 4, beginning at 10:30 a.m. EST. The Mustang women's first competition of the day will be the triple jump scheduled for 2:45 p.m. EST. The Mustangs will also be represented in the mile run at 3:05 p.m. EST.
